Joseph Ackland

1883–26 October 2015

Born in Bethnal Green in 1883, the eldest son of Joseph and Caroline Ackland. By 1911 he was employed as a mount fitter for walking sticks and living with his wife, Hannah, at 49 Shepperton Road, Islington. He had two daughters, born 1906 and 1908, and a baby son born in 1911.

Joseph Ackland enlisted in Bow.

London Regiment 1/17 Bn/ No 1797 (4797 on CWGC)

Rifleman Ackland died at the Battle of Loos. He left his daughters his £3 war gratuity and settled a debt to Dr Valance of 5/9d. It is believed that this is Dr Ernest Vallance LRCP, surgeon and doctor at the West Ham Infirmary, Leytonstone.
