He appears to have returned from Stratford, Canada, to enlist shortly after the outbreak of war. His last known address was in Paddington. Enlisted in Bow.

Lance-Corporal Hamp died at the age of 29 at the Battle of Loos. a contemporary newspaper clipping states that he was in the trenches when a German shell exploded and buried ‘some of the heroic defenders alive’. He left £9.1.6d. He appears not to have appointed a legatee. George Hamp’s brother, Mr VW Hampe, of Littlehampton, claimed his brother’s campaign medals in 1967.
