Born in Stepney in 1892, the eldest son of Harry (or Henry) and Emily Wells of 60 First Avenue, Plaistow. In 1901 the family were living together in 6C Block, Peabody Buildings, Glasshouse Street, Whitechapel, but by 1911 his mother had three more children and they were living in three rooms in Canning Town. By that time Albert was living with his widowed grandmother, Ellen, and his older cousin, at 82 Ernest Street, Stepney. He was employed as a Dock Clerk with the Port of London Authority London Regiment 1/17 Bn/ No 2913.

Rifleman Wells died at the Battle of Loos. He left his father £5.15.6d + £4 war gratuity.
